Firstly, it’s important to mention that REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. That’s the stage of your sleep when your eyes move around rapidly. However, the brain does not receive any visual information during this process.
- The 1st Non-REM stage happens when you close your eyes. At this stage it’s very easy to wake up from any noise.
- After 5-10 minutes, you will “enter” the 2nd non-REM phase, when your heart rate slows and the temperature of your body drops. This phase may last for 10-25 minutes.
- The 3rd and final stage of non-REM sleep is when you sleep deeply. At this stage, it’s harder for someone to wake you up but when this happens you may feel disoriented for several minutes.
The REM sleep stage comes after the completion of the three Non-REM stages, that is 1 hour and 30 minutes after you fall asleep. The first REM sleep period usually lasts for 10 minutes and the ones that follow it get longer. The final stage of REM sleep may last up to 1 hour. REM sleep is very important for our brain, as it stimulates those areas of it that help with learning. Also, REM sleep is associated with protein production.
